Many people are looking to buy home exercise equipment these days and find the selection overwhelming and confusing. This is normal, because there are literally thousands of possibilities. The bottom line is that choosing the right fitness equipment depends on your goals.

If you want something to help you lose weight and just help you get a little more fit the product you choose will be vastly different than if you want to start training to take part in a specific sport. Other considerations should include: your age, starting fitness level, your budget considerations, and your amount of storage and set up space.

This overview is designed to give you a general idea of how each piece of exercise equipment works and who it might be best suited for.

Stationary Exercise Bikes

A stationary exercise bike may be an excellent choice for someone who has been inactive and is just starting a workout program. A bike can provide you with low-impact cardiovascular exercise, and burn calories to help you take off those extra pounds.

Using a stationary bike will be less likely to cause injury than using other types of equipment. In addition, they are easy to use and store, and tend to be one of the more affordable pieces of exercise equipment available today.

Stationary bikes come in two styles, upright, which is just like a regular bicycle, and recumbent, which allows people with lumbar problems to sit more comfortably as they pedal.

Elliptical Trainers

An elliptical trainer is an aerobic exercise machine that is used to replace walking or jogging when the weather does not permit outside activity, you simply can’t get away, or you want a low-impact form of walking that is less likely to result in injury.

Because elliptical trainers have different resistance levels it makes a great machine for beginners who plan on continuing exercising and do not want to purchase a new machine each time their fitness level increases. Prices on these machines run from low budget to quite expensive.

Treadmills

Treadmills, like elliptical trainers, offer you exercise in the form of walking or running. They are not quite as low-impact as ellipticals, but can help you to provide you with increasing resistance as your fitness level increases.

Like cross-trainers, they can run from moderately priced to very expensive. Treadmills have been used successful for weight loss as well as indoor training for runners. While most of these machines fold up for convenient storage, some are quite heavy and take up a lot of room.

Stair Climbers

Stair climbers, or stair steppers, are designed to provide a low resistance way to burn off the same amount of calories you would climbing stairs without giving your knees and ankles the pounding climbing stairs would. This machines usually consist of a handrail and two pedal-like steps that you use alternating to get the climbing effect.

Others models in this area are a hybrid of a treadmill and a stair climber, and offer an experience a bit like walking up an escalator. Many people who have tried these kind of machines complain of hip and back pain. If you have been inactive for a long period of time this is probably not the machine for you.

Rowing Machines

Rowing machines are used both for low-impact cardiovascular exercise and for strength building. Used properly, a rower can strengthen all the major muscle groups. It can also be a fun machine to use. Like other exercise equipment, they run the gamut from quite reasonable to extremely expensive for the models used by competitive rowers.

Home gyms

Home gyms will tone and strengthen muscles. They provide a variety of weight-resistance exercises, which allow you to get a total body workout and burn calories as well.

Home gyms are geared toward people who are serious about exercise and keeping fit and toned. Quality models can be quite expensive and require considerable space.

Resistance Chairs

These specially-designed chairs allow people who have trouble standing for long periods of time to get a cardiovascular workout with extremely low impact. All the exercise is done sitting in a chair so you can use this machine while watching television. It’s a good alternative for people who have been inactive for long periods of time, or for older people who want to stay healthy but have a difficult time using traditional exercise products.

Home exercise equipment can help you lose weight, improve your cardiovascular fitness, and increase your strength. Choose a product that will most benefit you, and remember that while these machines have varying price points, you get what you pay for: a more expensive product is likely to last longer and give you better results.

Many people today are making the decision to workout and achieve better physical conditioning. Unfortunately, for most people that’s all it is-a decision.

They never actually take the steps necessary to achieve those goals. The reason for this is they set impossible goals that could never be achieved.

A very quick and relatively easy method to achieve you fitness goals is with the aid of exercise equipment for a home gym. When you have to get in your car and drive a half hour every time you want to work out, you won’t have much incentive to complete your goals. When all you have to do when you get home from work is throw on some workout clothes and begin exercising, you have a lot more incentive to get started.

The first thing to do when searching for exercise equipment for your home gym is to determine what type of workout you really need and also enjoy. For instance, you might be a great distance runner, but it might be time to develop those upper body muscles. If that’s the case, than you’ll want to purchase a weight set or equipment that focuses on your upper body.

If you don’t work out at all and have no idea where to start, it’s best to start doing what you enjoy. For instance, if you know that you enjoy running but hate the thought to lifting weights, don’t purchase a weight machine out of guilt; buy the treadmill and start achieving good health.

There is nothing more wasteful than purchasing exercise equipment for your home gym that you will never use. Unfortunately, all too many people make their buying decisions out of guilt; they know they should be doing a certain workout, so they force themselves to purchase the equipment; 5 months later, they haven’t even touched it.

Once the right workout is established, you will want to find the best brand name to purchase. Fortunately, this process is relatively easy. Don’t go to the store to find what you want; often times the salesman will pitch every piece of equipment that the store sells and you won’t get an honest appraisal.

Do your research on the internet; there are many great online reviews of the different exercise equipment for your home gym and their overall reliability. Once you find one that consistently gets good ratings from the experts and satisfied customers, only then should you move forward with your purchase.

Follow these simple tips to finding the right exercise equipment for your home gym, and you will be on your way to achieving your fitness goals quickly and easily.

Today’s Fitness manufacturers offer so many options in fitness equipment it can be difficult to determine the best options without consulting with a commercial fitness equipment dealer. We are seeing more fitness centers going into Retirement communities, Rehabilitation facilities and even nursing homes. The baby boomer market will eventually increase the need for fitness centers in these types of facilities. The real question is what equipment should you place in these types of facilities to insure a quality workout and avoid injures in the senior market fitness centers.

Safe Strength Training For Senior Fitness

One popular option is the hydraulic circuit fitness equipment; hydraulic fitness equipment has gained momentum with female fitness studios like shapes and other personal trainer facilities, as is an excellent choice for senior fitness. These circuits are perfect for short workouts as they can be arranged into a quick circuit where users can move rather quickly through the exercise routine. Hydraulic circuits can provide excellent metabolic, muscle and strength improvements for the user with less risk of injury since the resistance does not include weights or weight stacks. This can be very important for rehabilitation, as self-progression is slower and not likely to result in over exertion or re-injury of the affected area.

Cardiovascular Fitness Options for Seniors

While age does not prevent one from using any form of cardiovascular equipment there are some choices that seem more safe and or sensible for obtaining a good workout with little risk of injury. The Treadmill is still a good choice as walking provides a great form of calorie burning and conditioning of the heart and lungs. Most gyms will usually only order a few bikes or cycles and even less recumbent cycles but we have determined this to be a favorite among the seniors for cardio training. Recumbent cycles are designed with a larger seat and offer a backrest over the traditional upright bikes. Recumbent cycles offer a easy entry as the bike sits much lower to the ground and many of the newer bikes have a walk through frame design which prevents the user from having to step over the frame of the bike, they can simply sit down and peddle at their own capacity.

Recumbent cycles also offer little to no impact and can allow a user to exercise even if they have arthritis in the knees, ankles or back or hip injuries. Certainly a viable option for rehabilitation or nursing homes where users may have much less mobility. Some of the newer recumbent are also offering models that include upper body exercise arms so the user can work on a recumbent similar to upper body ergo meter or elliptical machines design working both upper and lower body. There are even a few manufacturers that develop rehabilitation exercise equipment specific to duplicate the sitting and standing muscles so that seniors can maintain their mobility and strength for daily activities.

What to Look For When Purchasing Senior Fitness Equipment:

Fitness Equipment that is safe for older or less experienced users

Fitness Equipment that allows for users who may have less mobility

Fitness Equipment that does not require full time spotting or Personal Trainer

Fitness Equipment that allows you to increase intensity at a safe progression

Fitness Equipment that facilitates the faster circuit training style workouts

Fitness Equipment that is easy to adjust for proper resistance and fit

Fitness Equipment that will improve the strength and not intimidate the user

Comfortable practical and make the user feel exercised but not exhausted

Hydraulic circuits and recumbent cycles can be perfect for those who are on the road to recovery from previous injuries, anyone looking for muscle toning without complicated resistance adjustments. The equipment is certainly safer and less likely to result in strains and joint impact to the inexperienced fitness equipment user while still providing a fast and efficient workout.
